What happens when the masks come off: the third COVID wave in the UK
The full lifting of all
restrictions will lead to an infection wave close to or worse than the second wave in January this year,
but that hospitalizations and deaths will be much lower. The peak in daily infections is almost four
times the peak seen in the second wave, while hospital occupancy is less than half that seen in the
second wave and deaths are around 12% of the level seen in the second wave. Of course, there is
great uncertainty surrounding these projections. Although all legal restrictions will end on July
19, individuals may continue to behave cautiously.
