S&P 500 has risen in the year after every single one of the 19 midterm elections since World War II, with not a single instance seeing a negative return. Historically, the six months after the election have been particularly profitable, with an average rally of 13% over that period. Interestingly, the prior year to the election has on average been flat, which in a market that has averaged c.10% price gains per year over the last hundred, is a big underperformance. So has some of 2022's underperformance been mid-terms related with some of that about to be unwound?
