Jan. 29 (Bloomberg) -- Plunging cotton production in the
U.S., the world’s largest exporter, will help erode a global
surplus and send prices surging as much as 17 percent this year,
according to T&K Futures & Options Inc.

US farmers intend to cut planting
by 16 percent this year to 10.32 million acres, the fewest since
2009, according to the average of 13 estimates in a Bloomberg
survey of analysts. Cotton futures in New York will jump to 95
cents a pound this year from yesterday’s close of 81.05 cents,
T&K President Michael Smith said.

The incentive to grow cotton was eroded by low prices and
the prospect of better profit on corn and soybeans, which surged
to record highs last year during the U.S. drought, Smith said.
Cotton production in the U.S. may fall 18 percent to 14 million
bales from 17 million last season as growers shift to other
crops, Rabobank International said Jan. 24. A bale weighs 480
pounds (218 kilograms).

“Farmers are going to choose soybeans over cotton,” Smith
said in a telephone interview from Port St. Lucie, Florida.
“The way prices are right now, cotton plantings are going to
come down even more than the 10.3 million acres. Unless prices
rebound more from here, soybeans are going to take a lot of
acres from cotton.”

Cotton traded on ICE Futures U.S. in New York is up 16
percent since the end of October, reaching an eight-month high
of 84 cents on Jan. 24.
